Presence Consulting in Action
Executive Development Retreat
The Chief Executive elect of a successful financing company had turned around many of the aspects of his company in a short space of time. As an enlightened professional he had undertaken several outstanding business school leadership programmes and was very well networked. Instead of choosing yet more leadership education, he realized that his next level of achievement required him to refocus his substantial abilities by reviewing his presence and business stature. He elected to undertake a three-day, one-to-one retreat with Karen Welch to meet the challenges of changing from his highly successful management of detail. He subsequently changed the balance of his attention to orchestrating others through sharing his accumulated business acumen.
During this session the obstacles to remaining present inevitably came to the fore and were dealt with in real time. He returned to his organization and won recognition from significant stakeholders for improvement in his gravitas within months.
I thought the balance of theory and sharing was spot on and
you
created an environment in which we all felt able to contribute
in a very open fashion.

Executive Coaching
A corporate divisional head developed an impressive reorganization during turbulent organizational times. She then faced a merger. Her department provided services across the whole company, but their contribution was not appreciated and their impact under-recognized. She needed to develop her influence at every level, including Board level.
An executive coaching contract of 12 sessions over one year with Karen Welch was agreed with the objective of improving her impact and reputation. In being able to review her attitudes and strategic and personal understanding before and after action she gained valuable confidence and a ringing endorsement of progress in the annual review of her role and her team.

Team Coaching
During the reorganization of a national public sector organization a small team of senior Finance executives were seconded to facilitate the delivery of the reduction and centralization of the finance division. The team had to face both inwards to the challenging experience of reluctant finance staff and represent the changes to the divisions. Karen Welch was enlisted as a team coach to support the team in their personal and professional interactions and help them to manage the stress arising from the wide variety of complexities presented by this role.
Public Sector Team
Development Facilitation
Teams of executive experts, with highly developed specializations or with a specific professional remit within a broader organizational setting frequently engage team facilitation. In addition to strategic imperatives, these types of groups may face challenges in making their message understood to their wider stakeholders across the organization and in communicating between themselves. Often the agenda for such facilitation is negotiating conflict as well as improving role impact.
Karen Welch has substantial experience is providing team development sessions which become the springboard for more effective team working. The leadership tools from training delivery and group dynamics become transferable skills to offer participant clients new insights which they can take back to their daily interactions and supports the team leaders in extending team members’ awareness of each other’s roles and biases so that they can make the allowances that will gain the benefits of synergy from their respective knowledge.
Working with you created a much greater level of self-confidence
and self-recognition that has increased my professional capability immensely... I found out how easy it is to balance conflicting
demands while remaining true to my values.

Organizational Change through
Executive Development
The BBC undertook a culture change programme to improve creativity involving ten thousand staff in Appreciative Inquiry staff meetings. The feedback was evaluated by seven BBC-wide strategy groups, which recommended a range of improvements. Each division established change teams comprised of both senior managers and a range of staff to create change in their own area. The top priority identified was improved leadership resulting in the creation of a leadership programme for 5,000 managers.
The contributions from Karen Welch including organization development input in one of the strategy groups, input on training design, divisional change management implementation, delivery of a complementary divisional leadership programme and direct development of hundreds of leaders through executive coaching and running action learning sets.
Learning from this was more recently applied in delivering appreciative inquiry based leadership development training for the Department of Health in 2009.
